What will I learn?
Discover the beauty of the Greater Brisbane Area with our Friday morning Plein Air Painting Classes! Learn how to sight an interesting composition, how to establish a clear value design and how to emphasise the sense of space.
This comprehensive course begins with 5 in-studio lessons, followed by 5 weeks of plein air painting in outdoor locations. Whether you're a beginner or an intermediate artist, this course will guide you through the techniques necessary to create realistic, expressive landscapes.
All levels welcome!
Alla prima
An Italian phrase that means "at first attempt". It's a wet-on-wet technique where wet paint is applied to wet paint, usually in a single sitting. This technique allows the artist to cover the canvas quickly and determine the main colours and relationships in the painting.
Plein air
A French expression that means "in the open air". It's a direct painting technique where the artist paints a landscape entirely outdoors. The entire painting is usually done outside, but touch-ups may be done in the studio.

About the Teacher
Australian artist and educator Mark Feiler grew up in Mackay, Queensland; currently he works from his home studio in Highgate Hill, Brisbane.
Mark attended Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney where he studied Fine Art from 2007 to 2009. He was trained as a painter and worked on perfecting his drawing and oil painting skills. He also attended Brisbane Arts Académie, Morningside. From 2014, Mark taught drawing and painting in Salisbury.
Post-COVID, Feiler now runs his own online and in person art school, Brisbane Art Classes, where he teaches students portraiture, figure drawing, oil painting and landscape painting. Beginning in 2023, Mark started teaching Painting Fundamentals classes at Chrome Street Studios focusing on Portraiture and Still Life.
Mark is the recipient of the jealous curator’s choice award for The Kennedy Prize, a prestigious Australian art award for artworks that embody, comment on or celebrate beauty. Mark is greatly inspired by nature, classical art and people in their everyday lives. His work centres around human figures on flat and quiet backgrounds, with an emphasis on characters painted in a crisp way.
